One phrase from the client’s brief resonates throughout this project: positive impact.
This home is New Zealand’s second to be certified as Passive House Premium, meaning it has a net-positive impact on energy use—it generates more energy than it consumes. But the positive impact extends beyond sustainability: it is a home designed to support health, comfort, and the evolving needs of both immediate and extended family at all stages of life.
From the entry, views of the surrounding ridgelines are framed before the building steps down into the heart of the living area. The spacious kitchen and pantry, seamlessly connected to the living room through the dining space, are designed for both entertaining and everyday family meals. A lift and ground-floor bedroom ensure full accessibility, incorporated from the outset to meet the future needs of the family. The thoughtful spatial arrangement considers both daily living and long-term adaptability.
The exterior of the home is understated yet purposeful—a simple gable roofline with a precisely balanced envelope that maximises building performance while maintaining privacy and framing views. The design interacts with the sloping site to create multiple spaces for ideal outdoor living, even in less-than-ideal weather. The minimalist palette of metal cladding and timber complements native plantings, anchoring the home within its natural context.
This home is a true testament to sustainable living, where thoughtful design and a commitment to future needs come together to create a lasting positive impact.
